A healthy village begins with healthy water resources. Long before borewells and pipelines reached rural Punjab, village ponds were the lifeline of every community — storing rainwater for irrigation, livestock, and daily use. Over decades, silt build-up, waste dumping, and neglect turned many of these ponds into unusable, stagnant liabilities instead of the community assets they once were.
At Anmol Sewa Foundation, we're working to reverse that decline — one pond, one village, at a time. Through our community-led pond restoration initiative, we're removing silt, clearing waste, and rebuilding the infrastructure needed to turn traditional water bodies back into a working resource for farmers, families, and livestock.
In most rural Punjab households, water isn't just a utility — it's the difference between a good harvest and a failed one. Traditional ponds serve three critical needs that borewells and canal water alone cannot fully replace.
For irrigation, ponds give farmers a reliable water source and reduce their dependency on costly groundwater extraction through diesel or electric pumps. For livestock, cattle-owning households get a free, natural water source close to home instead of having to travel or pay for water. And for the wider village, ponds support everyday sanitation and general household use, benefiting nearly every family in the community.
When a village pond dries up or becomes contaminated, all three of these needs shift onto groundwater — accelerating water table depletion, a problem Punjab is already facing at an alarming rate.
According to the Central Ground Water Board, several blocks in Punjab are classified as "over-exploited," meaning groundwater extraction significantly exceeds natural recharge. Reviving surface water bodies like ponds is one of the most direct, low-cost ways to ease that pressure.
Our approach isn't a one-time cleanup — it's a structured process designed to make the pond usable long after our team has moved to the next village.
Step 1: Community Assessment
Before any work begins, our field team meets with village elders, farmers, and the local Panchayat to understand the pond's history, current condition, and how it was traditionally used. This isn't a top-down decision — it's built with the community from day one.
Step 2: Desilting and Waste Removal
Years of accumulated silt reduce a pond's water-holding capacity, sometimes by more than half. Our teams physically remove silt and accumulated waste, restoring the pond's original depth and storage capacity.
Step 3: Structural Improvement
Where needed, embankments and edges are reinforced to prevent erosion and future silt run-off, extending the pond's usable life significantly beyond a basic cleanup.
Step 4: Community Handover and Maintenance Model
This is the step most restoration efforts skip — and it's the one that determines long-term success. Once restored, the pond is handed over to the local community, who take responsibility for ongoing upkeep. This creates a sustainable model rather than a foundation-dependent one, ensuring the pond doesn't silt back up within a few monsoon seasons.
Many pond restoration efforts fail for avoidable reasons. A one-time cleanup with no maintenance plan often means the pond silts up again within a year or two — which is why we build community ownership and a maintenance plan into the project from day one. Ignoring local water-use patterns can result in a restored pond that doesn't actually match community needs, so we always begin with a community assessment before any physical work starts. Skipping embankment reinforcement leads to erosion and rapid re-silting, so we reinforce the pond's structure wherever required. And excluding the Panchayat or local leadership from the process usually results in poor community buy-in and weak upkeep afterward — which is why we work directly with village leadership from the very beginning.
Punjab's agriculture-heavy economy is particularly vulnerable to erratic rainfall and groundwater depletion. Reviving traditional water harvesting structures like village ponds is increasingly recognized — including by the Ministry of Jal Shakti's Jal Shakti Abhiyan — as one of the most cost-effective, community-driven tools for building climate resilience in rural India, alongside modern irrigation infrastructure.
